Day 11 - Hurley to Bray, 12.4m

It was a sunny morning when we set off from Hurley.  Our first stop was Hurley lock before we walked along pretty good paths towards Marlow.

Marlow is a beautiful place in the sunshine and having admired the classic view we took the interesting detour through bits of the town, the detour was inspired by what the towing horses had to do in the olden days.

The Thames is now bordered by some very nice but very expensive houses and there are many more sea-going very expensive boats as well.  There is still space on the bank for Sailing and Rowing Clubs and we had a chat with a Wayfarer sailor who was taking part in WOW, Wednesdays on the Water at the Upper Thames Sailing Club, we thought the 'donated by ...........' on the side of the training boat was a really nice idea.

After crossing the river on a railway bridge, we passed another Cookham Reach Sailing Club.  Nothing was happening there, but both clubs have posters up saying new members welcome.

At Cookham we walked through the village and eventually after following some very variable paths came back out on the river bank.  Shortly after we saw a narrow boat with Ovaltine on the side.  We chatted to the owner who had rebuilt it from wood salvaged from the 1987 hurricane.

As we neared Maidenhead, the houses got bigger until eventually after 9 miles we reached Boulters Lock and stopped for lunch at Boulters Terrace Bar, which is right over the river, so we had a fabulous view.  The building used to be the home of Richard Dimbleby.

After lunch, we walked down the main road and crossed the river with the A4 on the Maidenhead Bridge.  Shortly after, we were amused by the antics of a school rowing club who were supposed to be having their photo taken with Brunel's magnificent railway bridge as the backdrop.

The final part of our walk started between the posh houses and their riverside moorings and then as we left the built up area we were back on rural paths by the river until we turned off to find our car near Bray lock and marina.
